About DotGitIgnore

DotGitIgnore is an open developer utility engineered to generate clean, conflict-free, and production-ready .gitignore files for modern software engineering stacks.

Deterministic Merging

Rules are sorted by logical categories and exact duplicates are pruned automatically without breaking syntax.

Safety Guards

Protects critical project instructions, Git metadata, and prevents bare provider names from acting as ignore rules.

Upstream Provenance

Seeded directly from GitHub's authoritative github/gitignore repository under CC0-1.0.

The Problem We Solve

Every software repository relies on .gitignore to keep compiled artifacts, local environment variables (.env), dependency directories (node_modules/, target/, .venv/), and operating system junk (.DS_Store, Thumbs.db) from contaminating Git commit histories.

However, modern software projects rarely use a single technology. A typical web or full-stack application often combines a language (TypeScript), a framework (Next.js), runtime tools (Docker), multiple editors (VS Code, JetBrains), and AI coding assistants. When developers assemble a .gitignore by hand:

  • They copy and paste snippets from disparate sources, creating redundant rules and messy formatting.
  • Order-dependent negation patterns (!important.log) get overridden or broken.
  • Shared team configuration files (like AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md) are occasionally ignored accidentally by overly broad wildcards.
  • Outdated rules accumulate because nobody wants to touch a working configuration file.

Why DotGitIgnore Exists

DotGitIgnore treats .gitignore generation as a principled software problem rather than dumb string concatenation. Our goal is to give developers:

Deterministic output: Selecting the same combination of technologies always generates the exact same ordered, normalized output regardless of the order in which you clicked them.
Semantic deduplication: If both your language template and framework template ignore dist/ or *.log, DotGitIgnore keeps exactly one copy while preserving comments and context.
Zero backend lag: Because all merging happens client-side in your browser, search filtering, template toggling, and generation execute instantly with zero server roundtrips.

How the Generator Works

When you use DotGitIgnore, your selections go through a multi-stage deterministic pipeline:

  1. Selection & Loading: The workstation resolves selected template identifiers against our template registry of over 320 verified configurations.
  2. Parsing & Normalization: Raw template contents are parsed into discrete lines. CRLF and LF line endings are normalized to standard LF, trailing whitespace is stripped, and comments are distinguished from glob patterns.
  3. Category Prioritization: Templates are sorted into a logical stack hierarchy: Operating Systems → IDEs & Editors → Languages → Frameworks → DevOps & Containers → AI Tools & Community Utilities.
  4. Conflict Resolution & Deduplication: Exact duplicate lines are eliminated. Negation patterns (!) are preserved in their respective sections to ensure Git pattern matching evaluates as intended.
  5. Validation: The output is scanned to guarantee no forbidden rules (such as Git directory metadata or shared instructions) are ignored.
  6. Formatting: Clean section headers, line counts, and rule statistics are attached for immediate review, one-click copying, or direct file download.

Template Sources & Upstream Attribution

We believe in standing on the shoulders of the open-source community:

  • GitHub gitignore Repository: Over 310 templates in DotGitIgnore are seeded directly from GitHub's official github/gitignore repository, released under the CC0-1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication. We are deeply grateful to GitHub and the thousands of contributors who maintain these templates.
  • Curated Supplementary Layer: Modern tools and frameworks that are not yet part of the upstream repository (such as Spring Boot, Vite, Quarkus, Turborepo, Astro, Svelte, and AI coding agents like Claude Code and Aider) are maintained in a carefully reviewed, supplementary curated layer with documented rationale and verified rules.

Reporting Issues & Suggesting Templates

Software ecosystems evolve quickly: new framework releases introduce new build directories, cache paths, or temporary files.

If you discover an outdated rule, a missing technology, or a bug in our generator, we welcome your feedback. You can reach out directly via email at contact@dotgitignore.com, or contribute template improvements directly to the upstream github/gitignore repository.
